A milling tandem is a series of machines used in the sugar industry to extract juice from sugar cane. The cane is crushed between large rollers to extract the juice, which is then processed to produce sugar. The milling tandem usually consists of three to seven sets of rollers, depending on the capacity of the mill. Each set of rollers is called a mill, and the first mill is called the feed mill. The cane passes through the feed mill, where it is crushed to extract the juice. The crushed cane is then passed through the remaining mills, with each mill applying more pressure to extract more juice.
After passing through the milling tandem, the extracted juice is treated to remove impurities and boiled to produce a syrup, which is then further processed to produce raw sugar. The remaining fiber, known as bagasse, is burned as fuel to generate steam for the mill's operations.
Efficient milling tandems are essential to the sugar industry, as they directly impact the amount of sugar that can be extracted from the cane and the overall profitability of the mill.
